Erhan tells us about himself with a simple Q&A
Q1. Who is Erhan?
I am a Turkish self-taught artist who believes that every branch of art is the sine
qua non of the human soul, but the painting is the most naive form of
self-expression and try to reflect these feelings in my artworks.
I have been producing since my childhood and painting has been my passion.
Over the years, I’ve experienced many different techniques and mediums in my
figurative and abstract paintings such as oil, acrylic and embroidery on canvas,
watercolour, mural art, digital art, illustration etc. and sometimes I combine them on a
canvas to create different patterns and compositions.
Q2. Where do you get your inspiration?
I get inspired by nearly everything in life. Inspiration is all around me and starts with everything I see or experience in my daily life. In my artwork compositions, the deep emotions, reactions and facial expressions of the people are my greatest source of inspiration. In my recent artworks, hazy objects and images that have lost their clarity, inspire me and I try to reflect them into my art in a perfect colour harmony. I also focus on subjects such as ‘repetition, eye illusions and confusion’. I liken each painting to human life, as I have undergone various decisions, techniques and colour changes many times until my art pieces are completed. The reason why I use different techniques and mediums in my paintings is that I love to experience the different harmonies they create on the canvas.
Q3. Did you have any formal training?
Actually, I have a background in science and I had some drawing classes during university years. Early in my art life, I was lucky that I had the opportunity to work with many artists in their studios and opened dual or group exhibitions together.
Q4. How would you describe your art?
I guess I can describe my art as ‘figurative art compositions with surreal elements, essences and sentiment’.
Q5. Which artists inspire you?
Actually, in what I do, I do not feel inspired by an artist. I can say that I appreciate Salvador Dalí because of the magical worlds he created, Zekai Ormancı because of the colour and light harmonies he created, Edward Anthony Spitzka because of the ambiguity in his figurative artworks.
Q6. What does Sentiment mean to you?
Sentiment is an original and innovative art project to reach a wide audience. 100 artists who shares their artwork in a puzzle form and every piece connects people to another via the artist’s sentiment in every single piece. I think 'Sentiment' is an art movement that can inspire many people and artists, harboring a sense of sharing and connecting people all over the world.
