Leanne Sinclair

Leanne tells us about herself with a simple Q&A

Q1. Who is Leanne?

My name is Leanne Sinclair and I am a full time tattoo artist and oil painter. I’m
originally from Middlesbrough in the north east of England but I have lived in the
beautiful town of Helensburgh in Scotland for the last 17 years and very much call
it home. Most importantly I am a mother and wife to my amazing son Jack and
husband Lee. My husband and I met whilst both serving together in the Royal Navy.

Drawing and painting have been a lifeline for me. Originally a way out of post natal
depression, it really helped focus my mind and help me get my thoughts out of my
head and onto paper. This led me eventually into tattooing, which I have been doing
for the last 5 years. I specialise in black and grey realism. I am lucky enough to own my own studio, we have a beautiful view of the loch from the window!

I have discovered oil painting in the last 18 months, it’s really helped me through the pandemic and sparked a new creativity inside me. I feel like I’m rediscovering myself as an artist and I’m really excited to see where it takes me. I am hoping that oil painting will eventually become a full time career for me.

Q2. Where do you get your inspiration?

I take inspiration from so many things but the simplest way to explain it would be from the things I love. Wether it’s musicians, movies, places, people, a moment, emotion or feeling. If it captures my attention then I want to paint it. If there’s passion involved it will show on the canvas.

Q3. Did you have any training?

I am a self taught artist. I have always loved to draw, It was all I used to do as a child. I actually forgot how much I loved it for a long time, from leaving secondary school up until I had my son, that’s really when I rediscovered my love for drawing.

I was a stay at home Mum and every spare minute I had I would draw, when my son was at school or in bed. I actually cringe at some of my drawings at the beginning but we all have to start somewhere!

Q4. How would you describe your art?

I would describe my art as abstract portraiture that captures movement or a moment in time. A snapshot.

Q5. What artists inspire you?

So many artist inspire me! I love the drama and high contrast of Caravaggio. Artemisia Gentileschi’s amazing story of strength and determination. Lycian Freud, Jenny Saville, Liu Yuanshou, Colin Davidson, Christian Hook, Andre Salgado... I could go on and on!

Q6. What does Sentiment mean to you?

I think right now, especially with the pandemic we all need to feel a real connection with the people we love and care about. The idea of three best friends or two sisters sharing a piece of the same artwork is priceless. It’s a gift that can be passed through generations. It’s a connection that can be treasured and help us through the hard times, to know your not alone.

I am honoured to be a part of this fantastic exhibition.
