Q1. Who is Mario?
Mario Arango (M.Arango) was born in Havana, Cuba in 1969. He found his love for the
fine arts from the time he was just 3 years old. From an early age, it was evident that
he was gifted with a great talent for painting. He has been able to develop into the
artist he is today with the support of his family, especially his grandfather.
Arango’s career expands over four decades, with hundreds of artworks worldwide. He
first inaugurated this style, in his 2003 “Ozono O No Somos” touring art exhibition.
This exhibition took place in collaboration with the United Nations starting in the
National Museum of Natural History in Havana, Cuba. This was the first art exhibition
of its kind in the entire world, it was created to bring awareness to the health of the ozone layer and the human impact on the world and the environment. Mario has had much success in Cuba and other parts of the world with his art, he immigrated to the United States in 2006, where he continued his work in the fine arts.
Q2. Where do you get your inspiration?
He is inspired by any place, thing or feeling. However, Mario is also well known in the fine art’s world for his creation of the “wheel” style, a personal seal he developed after his deceased father, who had both legs amputated due to diabetes. From a young age, Mario saw his father deal with daily life in a wheelchair, his father’s love for life, determination and will to live is Mario’s inspiration, which he honors with “wheels” in most of his paintings. In addition to his dad’s memory, the wheels symbolize the fast pace of the present world.
Q3. Did you have any training?
Mario studied art all throughout primary school and attended a special arts school for his secondary education in Havana City.
Q4. How would you describe your art?
Mario’s art style is an eclectic but predominantly fantastic-figurative style. With some landscape works as well. His paintings are recognizable for their combination of influences from 20th century artist and his descriptive use of bold and vivid colors.
Q5. What artists inspire you?
He is mainly inspired by the styles of Gustav Klimt and Pedro Pablo Oliva, amongst others.
