Nadine Hurst
Nadine tells us about herself with a simple Q&A
Q1. Who is Nadine?
I am an artist based in Newcastle Upon Tyne. When I was younger I primarily worked
with oil paints, focusing on realistic portraiture but more recently I have been creating
more graphic/illustrative paintings.
Q2. Where do you get your inspiration?
I primarily portray women in my work. Recently Iʼve been creating imagery that
celebrates the female form. I take a lot of inspiration from women in unusual positions.
I think it creates a more interesting image than standard life class poses do. Iʼm drawn to imagery of women contorted or bound by rope. I love the detail and texture in the skin when itʼs pulled and restrained. I do a lot of sketch studies of women pole dancing as I love the super unique poses women can hold on the pole. I also love the pageantry, lights and costumes of the stage! Thereʼs a brilliant Instagram account @stripperwithacamera, which has been a great source of inspiration for my work!
Q3. Did you have any training?
I studied Hair, Make-Up and Prosthetics at London College of Fashion. My favourite part of the course was doing the character designs. (Although it was only a small part of the course.) However, it really did help define my style as an artist. Doing the hundreds of character designs helped me move away from doing realistic oil portraits all the time and made me create super colourful, graphic illustrations.
Q4. How would you describe your art?
Colourful, celebration, femininity, freaky!
Q5. What artists inspire you?
I probably have hundreds of different artists I take inspiration from. Apps like Instagram make art so accessible, itʼs great. Recently Iʼve been loving super colourful work from Lora Zombie, Exotic Cancer and Stephanie Priscilla. Iʼve always had a long time love for Jenny Saville. Jonathan Yeo is a portrait artist Iʼve always been in awe of!
Q6. What does Sentiment mean to you?
Sentiment to me is like emotion. There is sentiment in art because there is emotion in art. If you look at a painting and it makes you feel happy or sad, then the painting already holds sentiment for you. Thatʼs why this project is such a brilliant idea because you get to physically have a piece of the painting that holds sentiment for you.

Now part of the Sentiment collection this image has been divided up into 1000 pieces allowing friends, family and fellow art lovers to connect to her story.
