Luke Gray
Luke tells us about himself with a simple Q&A
Q1. Who is Luke?
Luke Gray (UK) is a travelling surrealist painter specializing in large scale paintings on
walls and canvas. Born colour blind he was forced to use an almost exclusively black
and white palette, working with patterns and textures rather than colour. He draws
from traditional Asian decorative arts as well as art nouveau and symbolist painters.
Q2. Where do you get your inspiration?
After visiting over 50 countries I became inspired by a wide range of multicultural art
styles and traditional mediums combining and integrating techniques and patterns from different countries cultures and religions into his work. I am an aspiring ethnologist , so when when travelling, I often visits indigenous tribes; spending time to live with them and learn from them, taking meticulous notes on their textile patterns, tattoo markings and sacred symbols.
Q3. Did you have any training?
I studied graphic design and photography in University in London (UEL), but when i graduated I decided I actually wanted to become a painter and muralist.
Q4. How would you describe your art?
A melting pot of cultures and styles. I paint mainly with black and white because I am color blind but I try to include red or gold to add some variation.
Q5. What artists inspire you?
Klimt for his concepts, Utagawa Hiroshige for his compositions, and Dali for his mentality
Q6. What does Sentiment mean to you?
Sentiment is like a fragment of your mind and of your personality. It is something that reminds you who you are.
