Iris tells us about herself with a simple Q&A

Q1 Who is Iris?

I am a dreamer who found passion for arts inside science and decided to graduate in 3D Animation. I was born in a magical village called Sintra, in Portugal. Since young, I have  always aspired to venture uncharted waters and that is how I arrived in London, the city whose opportunities match my ambitions.

Q2 Where do you get your inspiration?

My inspiration has many roots! From my home country and its beautiful landscapes, to the knowledge, observation and experience amongst other cultures and their ways of expression. On top of this, my grandmother was always a wonderful artist, expressing herself in a variety of mediums such as painting and poetry. Growing up around her art inspired me to become one myself and carry the artistic legacy inside our family.

Q3 Did you have any training?

My first contact with art was through science when I was 13 in a “Art and Science” competition for school. After this, my mind was set to becoming an artist and so I was self taught in different mediums such as mixed media to create cosplays. Even though I followed the scientific route until university, I never stopped pushing my skills and had 2 years of private drawing and painting classes, which gave me a deep insight into the artistic world.

Q4 How would you describe your art?

My art is very experimental. I am very keen to try different styles and mediums. Even in 3D art, which I am specialising in, I have experimented with realism and stylised. One thing that is always consistent in my art is the themes of nature and culture. Honestly, my art expresses my feelings at that time period as well as my passion for the world around me.

Q5 What artists inspire you?

My parents were always passionate about art and so they took me to multiple galleries in all our travels. The artist that has always stood out most in my eyes and heart is Van Gogh. Other artists such as Degas with his ballerinas or Picasso and his surrealism were always in the back of my mind and inspired me the moment I first saw their canvases. In the digital world, Alena Aenami, Lois and Marco Bucci inspired me in the 2D medium, mainly for painting environments and following their tutorials. Beepe, Bill Ellis and the Pixar animations were my source of inspiration in 3D.

Q6 What does Sentiment mean to you?

It is the hard work, sweat and tears

It is the love and passion over the years

Expression of a lifetime…

Endless moments of thought, action, reaction!

Restart… fragments of rewarding pain...

The poetry within the storm

A word that expands outside eyes and paper

It has a Sent… however lies in your “Ment(e)”*

But secretly touches the Heart…

That word is Sentiment

And it lies here today in my Art.

*Mente is translation for Mind in portuguese
