Barrington tells us about himself with a simple Q&A
Q1 Who is Barrington?
I was born in Liverpool in 1960 and stayed there until I went to Loughborough to earn my BA Hons degree. Armed with that piece of paper I then worked as a furniture designer and interior designer for a number of years. Then started my own commercial interior design and build Company, along with an office furniture manufacturing company.
That venture took me all over the world with partners and offices in Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Melbourne. However no matter where I was, or what I was doing, it was always my art that I longed to do.
Now I am a professional artist working in oils painting Big Cats, Horses, Landscapes and the occasional Portrait. I have managed to create a demand for all my subject matters so that helps me jump from one to another, which helps to keep me sane.
Q2 Where do you get your inspiration?
Because I paint a wide variety of subject matter; I am constantly inspired to paint several things. I can be in the middle of painting a big-cat but then be overwhelmed by the beauty of a scene whilst on a walk in the countryside. That will fill me with excitement to paint landscapes, but it works the other way round too. I maybe painting a landscape but after watching a nature program I can’t wait to paint and capture the beauty of animals
Q3 Did you have any training?
I have always sketched and painted, and sold works since being in my teens. I received a
BA Hons degree in 3 Dimensional Design (majoring in Furniture Design) and spent most of my working life as an interior and furniture designer, but I wouldn’t say that helped me develop as an artist. Developing my skills as an artist really came from my continuing passion to paint.
Q4 How would you describe your art?
I paint in oils, and strive to capture realism in my work whilst trying to portray movement and atmosphere. I hope that comes across in my work whether in Landscapes, animals or Portraits.
Q5 What artists inspire you?
Oh gosh there are so many, but if I had to pick I would have to choose a style of painting that I love and then my favourite artists from that. In which case the works of the Pre-Raphaelites always moves me. I love the works of William Holman Hunt (The Light of the World) Millais and Rosetti etc
Q6 What does Sentiment mean to you?
We are in strange times right now, and I can’t see how we can get out of it anytime soon. Finding a way to connect to people (friends and family) is difficult, so any chance of making a connection to feel a part of others close to you is so important. We all need to be part of a chain or indeed a jigsaw piece. Owning a part of a work of art, when you know a loved one owns a part of it too has power. It can give that sense of connection each time you look at it, and having that bond gives a feeling of strength
What would you say has been your greatest achievement?
One of my greatest achievements in art was becoming an official artist to The National Trust in 2019. With the task of painting scenes of their properties, to be sold from the Trust shops. The first property is Cliveden Berkshire, seven miles from Windsor and the property that Meghan Markle stayed the night before the wedding.
For this property I have painted six scenes from around the estate. There are six originals, then limited editions prints, open prints and greeting cards of each piece. All of which will be on sale once the National Trust can re-open its gates. It is a huge honour to be accepted by them for this, and the opportunities (and indeed responsibility) is something I can’t thank them enough for.
